MOMMY MAKEOVER

The main goal of a mommy makeover is to improve mommy´s self-esteem. How do we do it? Basically, we improve your self-esteem by returning the shape and appearance of your body after childbearing. Many women notice changes in their bodies post-pregnancy. Luckily, there are many areas of the body that can be improved, most commonly the breasts, abdomen, waist and buttocks. A mommy makeover is typically performed as a single procedure and can include:

The Mommy Makeover is ideal for women with an excellent health condition, who have fully recovered from childbirth and are no longer breastfeeding, women with no mental or psychological problems and with a positive, realistic outlook on the results.

The risks of the Mommy Makeover depend on the complexity and number of surgeries performed.

The possible risks of a Mommy Makeover surgery include bleeding, infection, poor healing of the incisions, bruises, seroma, capsular contracture, unfavorable scarring, recurrent looseness of the skin, fat necrosis, deep venous thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, asymmetry, persistent pain and/or anesthesia-associated risks.

In preparation for a mommy makeover surgery, it is essential to arrive to Bogota at least two days before your surgery for you to adapt to the altitude of the city. You have to get lab tests done and a medical assessment with our anesthesiologist, who is responsible for authorizing your surgery. If you need assistance or have doubts, our plastic surgeon and/or staff will go over the risks associated with the surgery and answer all your questions about results and the recovery process.

The Mommy makeover surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Alternatively, we offer the option of overnight care.

The day of your surgery you must wear comfortable clothes, no jewelry, piercings, ear expansions or acrylic or gel nails. When you arrive to the clinic, you must sign the consent forms that confirm you fully understand the procedures, the risks and the possible results. Then, you will be taken to a private area where to get prepared for the surgery. A registered nurse will perform an assessment, after which, you will be ready.

After the assessment, you will either walk or be transported in a wheelchair to the operating room (OR). The operating room nurse will assist you and help you feel comfortable. Then, the anesthesiologist will administer the anesthesia type that you have agreed upon in the previous consultation.

Once under anesthesia and depending on the procedures you have selected, the surgeon will decide the order in which to perform the procedures, in most cases the Mommy Makeover takes from four to five hours approximately.

Once your surgery finishes, you will start the recovery process. Your recovery will begin in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where you’ll receive individual care from a nurse and medications to manage your pain. Patients usually spend an average time of 30-45 minutes in the PACU. Family members will not be able to visit you while in the PACU.

After you have met specific medical criteria, you will be discharged to proceed to the post-operative area. If you are staying overnight, you will go directly to your room and skip the post-op area.

In the post-operative area, you will be monitored and staff will help you stay comfortable until you have met specific medical criteria. You may stay there from 30 minutes to as long as six hours. Family and companions can stay with you in this area.

A registered nurse will take your vital signs, treat any nausea or vomiting, offer fluids, manage your pain, give you prescriptions to fill, and provide discharge information (both written and verbal) to you and to the person taking you home.

While the Mommy Makeover recovery is not extremely difficult, you will have just undergone a major surgery. Therefore, for the first few days, you will be sored and tired. For six weeks, you must not lift any heavy objects, and this includes picking up children under 15 pounds. Plus, no driving is allowed until you have finished taking your pain medications. It is recommended that you arrange for assistance with household chores and with your children for the first 72 hours.
Remember, it is very important to keep in mind the following recommendations:

  • You have to respect the medication schedule
  • You cannot self-medicate
  • You cannot drink liquor or consume hallucinogenic substances during the first two weeks of recovery
  • You cannot have sex before the surgeon´s authorization

After your Mommy Makeover surgery, gauze and bandages will be used to cover your incisions, a support bra will minimize swelling and support the breasts, and a compression garment will be used to control swelling in the abdomen, waist and buttocks.

It is safe to shower 12 hours after surgery. After this time, surgical wounds can get wet without increasing the risk of infection. Having a bath bench or shower seat can help tremendously, especially if you are supposed to limit movement or if you are feeling sore. Remember, you need assistance to take a shower at least for the first 72 hours.

This surgery requires 12 rest days, however keep in mind the following:

  • Patients who live in other cities of Colombia or abroad must stay in the city for 15-18 days
  • Removal of stitches: 10 – 12 days after the surgery
  • Post-op appointments: every 3 days on the first two weeks, after that they can be done via skype (J-gil79) or WhatsApp videocall.

Testimonials

My name is Claudia Stella Rivas I am 36 years old. My weight was 85 kilograms 6 months ago. I felt self-conscious and criticized by everyone. I met Dr. Gil while surfing the web looking for ways to lose weight. I read every single piece of information there, called and asked for a liposuction consultation using a promotion code that was offered then. I met Dr. Gil on Friday, December 20th 2013. I remember that day clearly because before leaving my house I said to myself “Today you will make one of the most important decisions in your life, change your body or leave it as it is” and I chose to change it. Today, I feel happy, accepted and my overall health has improved. I had a tummy tuck done to remove excess skin and stretch marks caused by constant weight change, I also had a liposuction done to remove excess fat in my abdomen, back, waist, pubis, legs and arms.
